The use of music to improve the performance of students in math in an unstable environment

My name is Donna; I am a learner of the Jamaica 4 Learning Community. I am a firm believer that each learner that is entrusted in the care of educators as the potential to shine. The onus is on such educator is to exercise patience, show each learner love and these two tools will unlock the treasures in each learner. It is with this in mind that I focused my research in using reggae rhythm to teach math. I also focused on building an emotionally safe environment for my learners.

I believe that for many learners, mathematics is a mirage of rules and formula that stretches the brain to an unspeakable distance. It is an enigma for many learners; the symbols associated to solving a problem are far too many. I believe that music relaxes the brain; it is soothing to the ear and in some ways stimulates energy so that one can glide majestically or move in a crazy manner to the music being heard. Music is a means of teaching any discipline that students’ lack interest.

With the use of reggae rhythm in my classroom I found that the students’ performance in math improved. They started enjoying the class and interacting with each other in a loving manner. They showed empathy towards each other and worked cooperatively to solve problems. I ensured that I created a safe and trusting environment for my learners. This boosted their confidence and gave them added drive to participate in the class activities. If music that the students can relate to is used in the classroom then their performance will improve.
